A Celebration of Hope

Tuesday, April 8, 8:00 p.m.
Michigan Theater

 Doors open at 7, and the show begins at 8pm. Our event will bring together students, faculty, staff, and community members (free of charge) to celebrate hope, resiliency, and connectedness—the protective factors that are most effective in preventing deaths by suicide.

The event will feature:


  • Mr. John Bommarito from Ann Arbor radio station 107.1, who is very supportive of our efforts, has agreed to lend his talents and will serve as the event emcee
  • UM Student Groups -- musical artists, dancers, and poets who are supportive of mental health and preventing suicide in our student community
  • Featured artist will be Mr. Stephen Kellogg, who has participated with other initiatives related to student mental health, and has generously donated his time and talent to the support of our initiative (http://www.stephenkellogg.com/home)
  • Local artist YRLK have also donated their talent and support (http://yrlk.com/)
  • Speakers who have been impacted by student mental health concerns and suicide -- former UM student and starting football player Will Heininger who has been featured on an ESPN documentary, and Miss Michigan - Ms. Haley Williams
  • A Call to Action which will provide the map for us all to join together in student suicide prevention at UM
  • A Showcase in the Michigan Theater lobby immediately prior to the event featuring efforts across campus

Beyond Bounds

 Workshop 2: Wednesday, April 9, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Wolverine Room in the Union

Beyond Bounds is a year-long student development program that encourages students to get the most out of their college experience by helping them discover and pursue what moves them. The program includes a one week retreat at the end of the summer and weekly events throughout the school year, focused on four main themes: discovery, connection, expansion, and action. There will be two workshops coming up where students can get a taste of Beyond Bounds, learn more about the program and decide if they are interesting in applying.

The program provides grants to approximately 1,900 U.S. students annually for projects in over 140 countries. Types of grants:

  • Academic grant - a self-designed program that may include coursework at a foreign university, independent field/library research, or any combination of these. 
  • Arts grant – a self-designed program to train in the creative or performing arts, usually via classes at an art or music school, training with a professional, or a combination. 
  • English Teaching Assistantship – a placement as an assistant to an English teacher at the primary, secondary, or university level. Placement is typically part-time and an additional independent project is expected.

Dealing with difficult people in your life can be extremely stressful. Unfortunately, few people ever learn the high-level skills needed to manage difficult relationships. This series will help you do just that.

Improving Relationships. Learn skills to navigate relationships of all types. Topics such as creating boundaries, communicating your needs, and maintaining self-respect in relationships will be explored.

Introduction to Mindfulness; A Performance Enhancement Series: CAPS Common Concerns Meeting

CAPS Annex, Michigan Union

Wednesdays- Performance Enhancement Series. This series is for anyone dealing with performance issues academically or in other parts of your life (job interviews, athletics, etc.). Each of the rotating topics are highly relevant to achieving optimal performance inside and outside of the classroom.

Introduction to Mindfulness. Each workshop will provide knowledge and experiential practice of basic mindfulness skills. Mindfulness can help to reduce daily stresses, cultivate greater awareness of the present, and accept life's difficulties. Workshops may include: introductory principles of mindfulness, sitting and walking meditations, emotion awareness, and relaxation breath work. Students are welcome to attend any week.

Information sessions are group advising meetings where students can learn about the environment major or minor, ask questions, and officially declare a major or minor with an advisor. Students must attend an information session before meeting with a concentration or faculty advisor. Students should meet with a peer advisor during peer advising walk-in hours if they are not able to attend an information session.
