Created in 1986 to honor the late Senator from Arizona and to promote the careers of future U.S. scientists, the Goldwater Scholarship is considered the preeminent prize for undergraduates in STEM fields.
Students apply in either their sophomore or junior years. The scholarship provides $7500/year for U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Winning applicants typically have a 3.8 or better GPA, extensive research experience, and plan to pursue a career in scientific research. Students planning to pursue an MD and career in medical practice are not eligible, although MD-PhD applicants pursuing biomedical research careers may apply. Please visit the Goldwater Scholars Foundation's website for application details and list of eligible major/careers.
